Conflicts in your relationship?

Do you find yourself and your partner constantly fighting and arguing without resolution? Have you stopped communicating with each other? Perhaps you don’t trust each other or are struggling with intimacy after an affair has been exposed? Maybe on of you is concealing an addiction from the other?

While all couples can sometimes suffer under the increasing pressures of everyday life, ongoing and unaddressed stress can leave you feeling exhausted, depressed, desperate, and with low self esteem.

You might feel that at this breaking point a separation or divorce is your only option, but talking through your problems together with a trained relationship therapist can help you get to the heart of your conflicts and come to value each other’s point of view, beliefs and feelings.

Let’s talk, together

Nothing provides more satisfaction in life than close, meaningful relationships with the ones we love… until these relationships start to break down.

I have seen at Guzman Psychotherapy many couples that come to therapy as a means of improving or rescuing their relationships. I will work together with you to help you rebuild your relationship, or if you wish to separate or divorce, to do so as amicably as possible.

My aim is not to resolve the issues sues for you, but to develop your skills so you can resolve the issues yourselves. I will encourage you to talk openly about difficult topics and explore your mutual childhood and family history. By analyzing your behavioral patterns and the ways you communicate with each other, I will help you see the discrepancies in you and your partner’s behavior and teach you the techniques to improve your communication and the way you express your affect to each other.

COUPLES COUNSELING, THE GUZMAN PSYCHOTHERAPY APPROACH.

You can have just a single session of couples counseling with me at Guzman Psychotherapy, but usually we will meet with me over a period of weeks or months, with both of you attending the session. However, if you would like to see a counselor separately before meeting up again as a couple, this could also be arranged.

During the first assessment, I will take a brief history from you, which will cover the issues that you are bringing to counseling, as well as a general history of your relationship. I will ask questions such as:

  • What issues have you been experiencing in your relationship?
  • How long have these issues been a problem in your relationship?
  • Have you ever been in counseling with your partner before?
  •  What have you and our partner done to resolve these issues?
  • What are your expectations of couples counseling?

Most importantly, my goal is to give you a safe environment in which to talk about your relationship issues so you can improve your communication and gain confidence in self-expression as a couple. I can help you discover how to negotiate and compromise with one another so you can discover ways of moving forward – either together or apart.
